Apple Pie
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 8 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored and sliced
Directions
- Melt butter in a sauce pan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add white sugar, brown sugar and water; bring to a boil. Reduce temperature, and simmer 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, place the bottom crust in your pan (see below). Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Sprinkle crumb crust (see below) over top. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.
- Crust:
In a bowl mix together
- 1 1/2 c. flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. sugar
Mix together and add to dry ingredients
- 1/2 c. Canola oil
- 2 tbsp. milk
- Mix in plate and press into a 9 inch pie plate starting along the sides. If top crust is desired, mix another half recipe and sprinkle over top of filling (this is soooo good). For single pie shell, prick and bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes.
- Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes.
Notes
Apple Pie may not seem like a Christmas thing, but it is truly American and I love it so I am going to make it. The recipe below uses an “oil crust” that I have used for many years. This comes from my childhood at my Aunt Vickie and Uncle Tom’s house. In the summer, I would often stay at their house for a week or so. They had lots of apple trees and I would collect apples and help my aunt Vickie make pie. This crust was her recipe (I think from her Mom). Anyway, I have never been a “flaky” pie crust fan, but I LOVE this crust.
