Tall, flaky Southern buttermilk biscuits with golden tops.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)

Directions

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

  1. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the buttermilk just until a soft dough forms; do not overwork.
  4. Turn out onto a floured surface, pat to 3/4-inch thick, and cut with a round cutter.
  5. Place biscuits on a baking sheet so the sides touch and brush with melted butter.
  6. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until risen and golden.
