Everyday cheese grits, stovetop and weeknight-fast, with a full cup of sharp cheddar melted in.
Ingredients
- 1 cup quick grits
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Black pepper to taste
- Hot sauce, optional
Directions
- Bring the water, milk, and salt to a boil in a saucepan.
- Whisk in the grits, reduce the heat to low, and simmer 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often, until thick.
- Off the heat, stir in the butter and cheddar until melted and smooth.
- Season with black pepper and a few dashes of hot sauce if you like. Serve right away.
Notes
Use freshly grated cheese; pre-shredded has anti-caking starch that can make grits grainy.
