Ingredients
- Cornstarch — 4 ounces (¼ mess kit cup)
- Sugar, granulated — 1½ pounds (1 mess kit cup)
- Salt — ⅓ ounce (⅔ mess kit spoon)
- Cocoa — 6 ounces (½ mess kit cup)
- Water — 2¼ quarts (2¼ No. 56 dippers)
- Butter — ¾ pound (½ mess kit cup)
Directions
Key ingredients
- Mix cornstarch, sugar, salt and cocoa together; add ¾ pint (½ mess kit cup) water. Stir until smooth.
- Heat remaining water to boiling point; add cornstarch mixture slowly, stirring constantly.
- Heat to boiling point; boil 5 minutes or until clear and thick, stirring frequently. Remove from heat.
- Add butter; mix well.
- Serve hot or cold.

SCALED TO 8 SERVINGS (the original is ÷12.5): Cornstarch — about 2 tsp Sugar, granulated — 2 oz Salt — a pinch Cocoa — ½ oz Water — 11½ tbsp Butter — 1 oz
