Recipe No. 657 from the U.S. Army’s WWII cookbook — Miscellaneous. Quantities are exactly as printed, for 100 servings; a scaled-down 8-serving version is in the notes.

Ingredients

  • Sugar, granulated — 6 pounds (3 No. 56 dippers)
  • Water — 2 quarts (2 No. 56 dippers)
  • Salt — (⅓ mess kit spoon)
  • Corn sirup — 1 pint (½ No. 56 dipper)

Directions

  1. Mix sugar, water, salt and corn sirup together.
  2. Heat to boiling point; reduce heat and simmer about 10 minutes or until thin sirup is formed. Cool; cover and store until needed.

SCALED TO 8 SERVINGS (the original is ÷12.5): Sugar, granulated — 7⅔ oz Water — 10¼ tbsp Salt — scale to taste ((⅓ mess kit spoon)) Corn sirup — 2½ tbsp
