An all-purpose buttery yellow cake that takes any frosting or simply summer fruit and a scoop of ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and butter and flour two 9-inch round pans.
  2. Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy, 5 to 8 minutes.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each, then mix in the vanilla.
  4. Whisk together both flours, the baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the batter in three additions, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour.
  6. Divide between the pans and bake until a tester comes out clean, 28 to 32 minutes. Cool completely before frosting.
