Grits as a warm, cozy sweet porridge - butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a swirl of maple. A Southern answer to oatmeal.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup quick grits
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water
Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 to 4 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Optional: raisins, toasted pecans, fresh berries
Directions
Bring the milk, water, and salt to a simmer.
- Whisk in the grits and cook 5 to 7 minutes, stirring, until thick and creamy.
Stir in the butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
- Spoon into bowls and finish with a drizzle of maple syrup and any toppings you like.
Notes
Both brown sugar and real maple give a layered, molasses-meets-woodsy sweetness.
