Mazagran (Austrian Iced Coffee with Rum)
Prep 5 minutes plus cooling
Serves 1
Level Easy

The Viennese coffee-house mazagran: strong black coffee, cooled, with ice, a little sugar and a shot of rum. The Austrian embassy’s guide to Vienna’s coffees calls it “similar to a Fiaker but served cold”.

Untested: not yet made in this kitchen. It is here for the Mazagran page.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml (¼ cup) strong black coffee or a double espresso
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 20 ml (about 1½ tablespoons) dark rum, or brandy
  • 3 to 4 ice cubes

Directions

  1. Sweeten the hot coffee and let it cool to room temperature, so it does not melt the ice at once. Put the ice in a small glass, pour the coffee over it and add the rum. Stir and serve at once.

Notes

Where this comes from The Austrian Press and Information Service (Embassy of Austria, Washington): “Similar to a Fiaker but served cold. The Mazagran is a strong, black coffee served with ice, a shot of rum and a bit of sugar.” Other Austrian guides use 2 cl (20 ml) of cognac or brandy. Maraschino? The English Wikipedia says “rum or maraschino”; no Austrian source found for maraschino. The photo Coffee with a glass of ice in Xàtiva, Spain, standing in for the Austrian drink.
